A certificate issued to John McLeod after finishing his apprenticeship as a fitter in 1923.
John McLeod served his five year apprenticeship with the North British Locomotive Co, at the Hyde Park Works in Springburn. He left the company less than three weeks after finishing his apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships were a very common way of training school leavers for a skilled trade. They lasted for a fixed period of time, during which the young person gained practical experience in his chosen trade on a lower wage than the other staff.
