Conductresses cashing up at Langside tram depot, 1940s.
In 1947 Eric Fitzpayne, the General Manager of Glasgow Corporation Transport, decided that women should be permitted to work as conductresses, due to a severe shortage of staff. Women had of course worked during both World Wars as conductresses, but had been expected to give up their jobs when the men returned to civvy street. Fitzpayne's decision established the famous Glasgow clippie, with her notorious (if apocryphal) war cry, "Come on, get aff!".
