Salaries and wages office

The salaries and wages office at Glasgow Corporation Transport headquarters in Bath Street, 1940s.

By the early 1930s the Transport Department employed over 18,000 people and was responsible for running trams, many bus services and the Glasgow Underground. With so many employees to pay, the salaries and wages staff must have been kept very busy. When the Second World War broke out the Department decided to maintain all its services, although there were unavoidable restrictions resulting from the black-out and other war-time circumstances. Many men left the department to enlist in the armed forces and women were employed to fill the vacancies.
