Rectorial election advertisement for Dr Tom Honeyman (1891-1971) in Glasgow University Magazine, October 1953.
Honeyman had been a medical student at the University and worked as a doctor before becoming an art collector and dealer. He became Glasgow's first Director of Museums and Art Galleries (1939-1952), famously purchasing Salvador Dali's painting Christ of St John on the Cross and taking a leading role in the early negotiations to secure the Burrell Collection for the city. He was also a founder and first chairman of the Citizens' Theatre. Honeyman was elected and served as Rector of the University from 1953 until 1956.
The Rector is a senior officer elected every three years by the student body to chair the University Court, the supreme governing body in each of the older Scottish institutions. There are differences in the election and role of the rector, for instance at Edinburgh (where the professors can vote) and at Dundee (where the Rector does not chair the Court).
