MacCormick (1904-1961) was one of the leading lights in the Scottish nationalism movement from the 1930s to 1950s. He founded the Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association in 1927 and was one of the founders and first chairman of the National Party of Scotland while still a student. In 1942, when the National Party refused to widen its membership to include all parties who wanted a degree of self-government for Scotland, he resigned and founded the Scottish Convention. In 1949, the Scottish Covenant was launched by MacCormick, and received over two million signatures. It sought a federal Parliament for Scotland with "adequate" authority over Scottish affairs.
MacCormick has often been criticised for achieving little, but he raised the profile of Scottish nationalism at a time when it had relatively little support in the country.
