Cartoon

A cartoon by "Ochre" in Glasgow University Magazine, 22 April 1925, depicting two very different types of students! GUM was noted for the quality of its satirical and irreverent cartoons, which poked good-natured fun at students and University staff alike.

Charles Allen Oakley was one of GUM's editors and illustrators and used the name "Ochre" for his work. He graduated BSc from the University in 1923 and had a distinguished career as a writer and University lecturer. During the Second World War he was controller of the Ministry of Aircraft Production, and afterwards became Scottish Controller of the Board of Trade. He also served as President of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, and was the author of numerous books and articles on the history of the city.
