William Leishman

William Leishman (1834-1894) was Regius Professor of Midwifery at the University of Glasgow 1868-1894.

Leishman was the son of Matthew (1821-1874), the famous minister of Govan Old Parish Church, and the father of Sir William Boog Leishman (1865-1926), the eminent pathologist. He was Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at Anderson's College 1863-1868 but began to specialise in obstetrics and was appointed Professor of Midwifery at the University. He was a member of court 1889-1893.

In 1870 Leishman published System of Midwifery which became a text book for the subject. He took charge of a specialist ward for women's diseases at the Western Infirmary in 1877 and had obstetrics beds at the Glasgow Maternity Hospital. He served as a representative on the General Medical Council 1886-1893.
