New Year's Day Forenoon

Coloured cartoon from the Northern Looking Glass 9 January 1826 entitled "New Year's Day Forenoon". It is the seventh and last in the series depicting the events of a typical Hogmanay in Glasgow. Crowds flock to spend their money at the beginning of the January sales. A dishevelled man holds aloft a placard advertising the magazine.

The caption relates that "The population of the city is all astir, the country people flock into town in their Sunday best to purchase their little New Year gifts, and stare at the toys and tempting dresses in the shop windows. Hundreds of young people laying out their stock of pocket money give interest to the scene while mamas and aunts, sisters and brothers either advise or assist in the bargains and help the little merchants to make up their minds in the difficult task of selecting amongst so many tempting articles - or add to the stock of cash when the toy fixed upon is above the finances of the young purchaser."
