Coloured cartoon from the Glasgow Looking Glass 9 July 1825 giving an artists' impression of the proposed Knox Monument and Necropolis in the Merchants' Park. The report accompanying the cartoon informed readers:
"The summit of the Merchants', or Fir Park... is now finally fixed upon as the situation for the Monument to John Knox. It has been suggested that this piece of ground might be made use of for a burying place, a monumental garden we may call it, similar to the celebrated Pere la Chaise at Paris: the effect would be beautiful, and its vicinity to the Cathedral would add much to its interest. We have given a sketch of the Park, supposing it turned to this purpose..."
The Knox Monument was erected in 1829, and the Necropolis opened in 1833.
