A view from the south of Kidston Terrace, a new housing development in the Gorbals, photographed in 2004. In the space between the two apartment blocks is a glass-encased, orange-tinted photographic image of a woman in a steel box standing on stilts 5 metres above the ground. Hovering above it on an anchor chain is the UK's only suspended sculpture - a twice-life-size bronze sculpture of a woman, lying horizontally above the box.
Designer Matt Baker and photographer Dan Dubowitz of Heisenberg were behind the artworks. Known as The Gatekeeper, it symbolises the notion of Gorbals as a gateway for Irish, Jewish and Asian immigrant communities over the centuries. Beneath the whole structure lies a crypt containing burned remains of objects donated by members of the Gorbals community.
The artworks, unveiled in 2002, were commissioned by the Crown Street Regeneration Project as part of a programme of rebuilding in the area and improving its image.
