Wellington Statue

The statue of the Duke of Wellington on his horse, Copenhagen, in front of the Royal Exchange building. The Duke is minus his usual headgear, a traffic cone. In the foreground, a group of councillors and officials discuss plans to maintain the statue. The photograph appeared in the November 1984 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

The statue had been one of eighty-nine monuments listed in a Bulletin article two years earlier, at the time of the launch of the Council's "Adopt a Monument" scheme, which invited sponsors to contribute towards the cost of their upkeep. The article was reprinted in The Highlander Magazine in America. Subsequently the Clan Wallace Society in the United States launched an appeal to raise money to restore the statue in Robroyston to William Wallace, which was also listed. As a result, the Planning Department's Conservation Section received a cheque for US$800 dollars from the Society.
