Walter Elliot (1888-1958) was an MP and Secretary of State for Scotland.
Elliot studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and served as a doctor with the Royal Scots Greys in the First World War, winning the Military Cross and Bar. He was successively MP for Lanark, the Scottish Universities and Kelvingrove, and held office as Minister of Agriculture (1932-1936), Secretary of State for Scotland (1936-1938) and as Minister of Health (1938-1940). He remained a highly respected backbencher until his death in 1958, also serving as Rector of the Universities of Aberdeen and Glasgow and as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland (1956, 1957).
Elliot had a life-long interest in medical science and was an authority on nutrition. A Conservative with a strong interest in social reform, he was one of the best-known Scottish politicians of his age. He was a popular broadcaster, speaker and lecturer on topics reflecting his remarkably wide interests. He was a leading supporter of the Zionist cause.
