Jack House

Glasgow journalist, historian, broadcaster, author and raconteur Jack House receiving the St Mungo prize for 1988 from Lord Provost Susan Baird. The photograph appeared in the February 1989 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper, The Bulletin.

The St Mungo Prize - a gold medal and £1,000 - has been awarded every three years since 1936 to the person deemed to have done most in the previous three years to promote the interests of the city of Glasgow. The next winner in 1991 was to be Susan Baird herself.

Jack House came to be regarded as an authority on Glasgow, earning the nickname "Mr Glasgow". He wrote over seventy books, most of them with a Glasgow theme. His best selling work was Glasgow Old and New, published in 1965. He was happy to be described as a reporter, "reporting on what I see and hear and read about and remember". Memory was one of his greatest assets, as demonstrated on his frequent appearances on radio's Round Britain Quiz.
