New Year, 1990

Part of the crowd of over 10,000 people at the annual Hogmanay Party in George Square at New Year, 1990. The photograph appeared in the February 1990 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper, The Bulletin. The lights, installed by Northern Lights of Govan, included ultra-violet angels elevated 18 metres high.

New Year 1990 was of particular significance as it ushered in Glasgow's reign as European City of Culture. Pop groups and other musicians performed on two stages erected in the square. The revellers were led in singing traditional songs by singers from the Glasgow 1990 Choral Project, “Call That Singing”. The event received wide television and radio coverage.

Celebrations were not confined to George Square. At midnight, a huge firework display encircled the city centre. Teams from Spain, Holland, Italy, Portugal and the UK launched fireworks from Glasgow Green, Ruchill Park, Springburn Park, Bellahouston Park, Scotstoun Showground and Queen's Park.
