A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of Sir Archibald Alison (1792-1867). The painting was by Sir John Watson Gordon.
Alison was a lawyer who became Sheriff of Lanarkshire in 1834 and he was Rector of the University of Glasgow 1850-1852. He was a Tory in politics, and was involved in repressing militant cotton spinners and trade unions during the strikes and public disorder of the 1830s. He was the author of The History of Europe.
Following Alison's death his Possil Estate was sold to Walter Macfarlane & Co and the huge Saracen Foundry was built there.
