A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of Robert Hamilton of Airdrie (1754-1799). The identity of the original artist is unknown.
Hamilton was a merchant who acquired a large fortune trading with China and who died in Canton. He left much of his fortune to the University of Glasgow, where his cousin Dr William Hamilton (1758-1790) was the Professor of Anatomy and Botany, 1781-1790.
