Christened Robert Graham, the son of Nicolas of Gartmore, Robert was a graduate of the University of Glasgow and became a planter in Jamaica, where he served briefly as Receiver-General. He was Rector of the University of Glasgow, 1785-1787, and the Radical MP for Stirlingshire, 1794-1796. On the death of his kinsman John Cunninghame he inherited the Finlayson Estate and adopted the surname Cunninghame.
Cunninghame-Grahame was a poet most famous for the immortal lines "If doughty deeds my lady please...".
