Bartholomew was the founder of John Bartholomew & Co, cotton manufacturers and printers in Glasgow from 1768. His firm of was one of the first to install power looms in its factories in the early 19th century. The company's main printworks was the Dalmarnock Printing and Dying Works, commonly known as the Bartholomew Works. It was located at the foot of Bartholomew Street, which was named in honour of the manufacturer in 1863.
