A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of the poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844).
Campbell, born in High Street, was the eleventh child of a tobacco merchant and attended the University of Glasgow at the age of 12. Four of his most popular poems were "Ye Mariners of England", "The Exile of Erin", "The Battle of the Baltic" and "Pilgrim of Glencoe". He lived for much of his life in London (he was a founder of University College) and travelled widely in Europe. He died at Boulogne and is buried in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey.
