A photograph by Thomas Annan of a portrait of Dr Robert Cowan (1796-1841) by the artist John Zephaniah Bell. Cowan was a surgeon (1796-1807) and physician (1836-1838) at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and a member of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He was a founder of the Glasgow Statistical Society and published a volume entitled The Vital Statistics of Glasgow. He became the first Professor of Medical Jurisprudence and Forensic Medicine at the University of Glasgow, 1839-1841.
This portrait appeared in an 1868 exhibition of portraits of significant Glasgow personalities. Thomas Annan produced an illustrated catalogue to accompany the show which was held at the Glasgow Gallery of Art, subsequently named the McLellan Galleries, at 270 Sauchiehall Street.
