Condemned Cell

One of the two underground cells in the Justiciary Courts building on Saltmarket, for prisoners condemned to death. This is where men condemned to hang for their crimes spent their last few hours in the company of a slop bucket and wooden stool.

Hangings were carried out in the square in front of the building (famously, facing the Nelson Monument). The bodies of executed convicts were then returned to the building and buried in its central courtyard, under flagstones bearing the initials and the date of execution of each man or woman.
