Archbishop Fairfoul's Arms

The coat of arms of Archbishop Andrew Fairfoul, who became the first post-Restoration Archbishop of Glasgow in 1661. The arms depict the traditional fish, birds and tree derived from the legends of the life of St Kentigern, Glasgow's patron saint.

Fairfoul was born in Fife and studied at the University of St Andrews. It is said that King Charles II heard Fairfoul preach several times while visiting Scotland in 1650, and following his restoration to the throne he appointed him to the Glasgow see on 14 November 1661. Fairfoul was consecrated as Archbishop on 15 December that year at Westminster Abbey.

Fairfoul served as archbishop for only two years, until he died in Edinburgh in early November 1663 at the age of 56.
