A view of navvies excavating a trench in boulder clay during the construction of Meadowside Quay in 1908. Much of the work at this final stage of the excavation was done by hand, in preparation for the laying of the foundations of the quay walls. The sturdy timber supports were inserted to prevent the sides from falling into the trench.
