An advertisement which appeared in the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1883-1884 for summer tours in Scotland aboard David MacBrayne's Royal Mail Steamers.
MacBrayne (1818-1907) was a junior partner in David & Alexander Hutcheson when it acquired a west coast steam ship line from J & G Burns in 1848. He became sole partner in the business (renamed David MacBrayne & Co) in 1878 and specialised in providing tours of the Highlands and Islands. By the 1880s his company had acquired a virtual monopoly of the passenger services to and from the Western Isles and along the west coast of Scotland by the 1880s.
The name survives in Caledonian MacBrayne, the ferry company formed in the 1980s with the merger of MacBraynes and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co.
