Train services departed from the railway station at Townhead, but passengers could travel there from Candleriggs in the the city centre by horse-drawn omnibus. Travelling in an open railway carriage was cheaper but would have not have been for the faint hearted, as passengers were exposed to the elements and to smoke and sparks spewing from the railway engine.
