Advertisements for the Garnkirk & Glasgow Railway, Samuel Wilson's wire cloth factory and Thomas Howey and Co's carriers. This page is taken from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1838-1839.
Train services departed from the railway station at Townhead, but passengers could travel there from Candleriggs in the the city centre by horse-drawn omnibus. Travelling in an open railway carriage was cheaper but would have not have been for the faint hearted, as passengers were exposed to the elements and to smoke and sparks spewing from the railway engine.
