This postcard shows Castlemilk House in 1904. Cassilton Tower was built in the 15th century and was reputedly where Mary Queen of Scots stayed on the night before the Battle of Langside in 1568 (a claim that is by no means unique!) Castlemilk House was the mansion built around the old tower house by the Stuart family during the 18th and 19th centuries. The house and the estate were acquired by Glasgow Corporation in 1938, and the house became a children's home until 1969.
Castlemilk House was demolished in 1972. Only the stable block (built c 1794) survives, and that was extensively damaged by fire in 1994.
