Believed to have been born in Perthshire, Peter Lowe (d 1613) spent up to thirty years studying and practising as a surgeon in Europe (at one time serving as the surgeon to Henry IV of France) before returning to settle in Glasgow c 1598. He became King James VI's surgeon-in-ordinary, and the founder of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow (which later became the Royal College) in 1599.
