This tiny engraving shows the Bridgegate looking west past the Merchants' Hall, during one of the great floods that wreaked havoc on low-lying areas of the city during the late 18th and early 19th century. It probably depicts the scene in 1795, when the River Clyde rose to such an alarming level that the Hutchesontown Bridge was swept away and shops and merchants' warehouses were inundated with water.
