Wypers

Wypers, 70 Renfield Street, photographed in the early 1960s. At the time it was a pub and off licence, but had also been used as a restaurant in earlier years.

There have been licensed premises on this site since 1865. The licence was held by Thomas McVey in the latter years of the 19th century, and amongst other things he stocked his own blend of whisky. At that time there was a bar and a large smoking room where newspapers were available for customers.

The pub was known as The Cecil in the early years of the 20th century when the licensee was John Young Whyte, who was associated with The Horseshoe and other pubs in the city. It was renamed Wypers, a name previously used by a pub at 55 Sauchiehall Street, when it was taken over by John Campbell around 1930.
