The statue of Robert Burns in George Square, featured in Glasgow City Council's "Adopt a Monument" scheme which attempted to persuade sponsors to pay for the upkeep of monuments in the city. In December 1985 the Council's newspaper The Bulletin reported that Glasgow and District Burns Association had agreed to donate £100 annually towards the cost of maintenance of the statue.
The statue to Scotland's national poet was erected on 25 January 1877, 118 years after the birth of Burns. 10,000 people are said to have formed a procession from Glasgow Green to attend the unveiling, with as many as 30,000 lining the streets. The bronze statue is the work of sculptor George Edwin Ewing, and was cast by London art founders Cox & Sons. Four bronze reliefs by the sculptor's brother, James Alexander Ewing, depict scenes from the bard's poems.
