The Hamilton Memorial Fountain in Maxwell Park, Pollokshields, photographed for the July 1984 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin. The fountain was featured in the Council's "Adopt a Monument" scheme, an attempt to persuade sponsors to pay for the upkeep of monuments in the city.
The fountain was constructed by the Doulton Company in the famous Italian white marble from Carrara in Tuscany. It is a memorial to John Hamilton, who hunted in the area when the land was a marsh. The French Renaissance-style fountain, with tiered basins and a hunting figure on top, suffered from the effects of climate and vandalism. Sadly, sufficient funds for its restoration could not be found, and the fountain was demolished in 1989.
