King's Theatre Pantomime

Ugly Sisters Angus Lennie and Stanley Baxter on stage at the King's Theatre in Cinderella, the Christmas 1980 pantomime, pictured in Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

Comedian, impressionist and actor Stanley Baxter was born in Glasgow. Baxter took to the stage in the Citizens' Theatre, before moving to London to work in television. He made several television comedy series in the 1960s, '70s and '80s, which were enjoyed by enormous audiences and memorable for their high quality production. Baxter was an uncompromising professional. He played all the parts, both male and female. A particular favourite for Scottish audiences (and the subject of the banner in this photograph) was the series of sketches Parliamo Glasgow, in which Baxter attempted to teach viewers to speak Glaswegian as a foreign language. He also appeared in films such as The Fast Lady and remained a great favourite on the Scottish pantomime circuit up until his retirement in 1990.

Fellow Glaswegian Angus Lennie is best remembered for playing TV chef Shughie McFee in the original Crossroads. His most famous film role was alongside Steve McQueen in the prisoner-of-war drama The Great Escape.
