Women and children are happy to pose for the photographer outside a row of miners' cottages at Netherton, Temple in 1912. An open drain leading from the well, which can just be seen in the background, runs down the unpaved street. There are washtubs beside the cottages' doors.
Netherton was one of many small mining villages on the outskirts of the city, and coal and ironstone were mined extensively in the area during the second half of the 19th century.
At the time when this photograph was taken, Netherton lay beyond Glasgow's western boundary and the increasingly stringent building regulations imposed by the city's Dean of Guild Court. House building in the areas beyond the city boundary was often unregulated and landlords were not obliged to provide an inside water supply and adequate sanitation.
