Wood Street, 1910

Wood Street, 1910

This photograph shows a woman and group of children on steps at Wood Street, Port Dundas, in 1910. Despite often dirty and insanitary living conditions, mothers took a pride in ensuring that their children looked clean.

Large families were commonplace in the early 20th century. In the absence of play spaces, children had to amuse themselves in and around the city streets and tenements. Lack of space in overcrowded homes would force children outside, when they were not helping with the household chores. Getting back indoors was not a problem, as house doors were seldom locked.
