Wallace & Weir Overcoat

The "Winston" overcoat, illustrated in the Walwer styles overcoats catalogue for the winter of 1939-1940 issued by Wallace & Weir, 26 Argyle Street, manufacturers of men's and boy's clothing.

The choice of name for this coat, the only one in the range to be named after a person, is a clear indication that Winston Churchill was back in popular favour in 1939. Churchill had spent most of the 1930s in the political wilderness, but by 1939 it had become clear that his many warnings about the dangers posed by Nazi Germany were fully justified. When war broke out on 3 September 1939, Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. In May 1940 he became Prime Minister.
