Elphinstone Tower

An early 20th century postcard view of the Gorbals Hosiery & Shirt Warehouse and the wine and spirit merchant's premises next door, which occupied the old (and severely-altered) Elphinstone Tower and the adjacent chapel buildings in Main Street (now Gorbals Street), Gorbals. In fact the buildings shown here had been demolished by the City Improvement Trust in the early 1870s, and this postcard is a reproduction of a photograph by Thomas Annan, taken in 1868.

The postcard was published to meet the great demand for pictures of "Old Glasgow" that arose after many of Glasgow's oldest buildings were swept away in slum clearance projects.
