The Canal du Nord formed an important part of the Hindenburg Line, a formidable series of defensive fortifications along the Western Front. On 11th September, the 2nd HLI received orders to take the slag heap on the far side of the canal and to secure the crossings. By the end of the day, the objectives had been achieved.
As part of the Regular Army, the 2nd Battalion was not disbanded following the Armistice of November 1918. It was chosen to participate in the march to the River Rhine, where it celebrated Hogmanay in its winter quarters at Worringen am Rhein, in Germany. In August 1919 the battalion was sent to Murmansk to cover the evacuation of British troops who had been fighting in the Russian Civil War.
