Highland Light Infantry

A section of the 16th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, on the homecoming parade in 1919. Led by the Pipe Band, the parade is swinging round past Charing Cross into Sauchiehall Street. By coincidence, the scene of the photograph is close to the Museum of The Royal Highland Fusiliers, at 518 Sauchiehall Street.

The official welcome home by Lord Provost Sir James W Stewart was held on 18 November 1919, the third anniversary of the attack at Beaumont-Hamel during the Battle of the Somme, in which the Battalion was heavily involved. Some ex-soldiers already demobilised marched alongside the pipe band through the streets to the City Chambers for lunch. In the evening, around 1,800 people attended a civic reception and dance at St. Andrew's Halls.

The 16th Battalion was closely identified with the Boys' Brigade, from whose ranks came many of the early recruits.
