This photograph shows the CBC Bonsai Garden at the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. The Bonsai Garden was sponsored by Central Building Contractors (Glasgow) Ltd.
The ancient art of Bonsai involves restricting plant growth to provide miniature versions of trees and shrubs. Starting in China over 1,000 years ago, it spread to Japan and subsequently to the west. Availability of specimens in garden centres has increased its popularity in Britain in recent years.
The CBC Bonsai Garden pavilion was built in Japanese style, surrounded by a timber veranda overlooking a model nursery with an impressive display of mature Bonsai trees on loan from Samlesbury Bonsai Nursery. Nursery staff were on hand to give demonstrations and supply advice on the types of plants suitable for Bonsai treatment.
