The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester. Page 67 includes surnames from Ure to Warrand.
The brothers James and John Wardrop were tobacco merchants. James inherited the estate of Springbank, Dalbeth, from his father but it was sold after only a few years.
William Wardlaw, merchant and manufacturer, was a partner in the firm Smith & Wardlaw. He was a bailie in 1796 and 1800. His famous son was Ralph Wardlaw, the eloquent preacher and prolific writer who was a Congregationalist minister and a founder and a professor of Systematic Theology at the Glasgow Theological Academy.
