The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester. Page 30 includes all surnames with the initial letter E.
Robert Ewing, as well as being a baker and victualler, had a considerable interest in the grain trade which he had inherited from his father. His sister, Isabel, married Archibald Smith of Jordanhill, a West Indies merchant, and lived until she was 101 years of age.
Walter Ewing added his uncle's name of Maclae when he inherited the estate of Cathkin from him. A well respected merchant, Ewing was often employed as an arbitrator to wind up bankrupt companies, the most prominent of which was the Glasgow Arms Bank in 1793.
