The first Glasgow directory was published in 1783 by John Tait. This image is taken from a facsimile reprint published in 1871 by Robert Forrester.
In this second page of his introduction, Tait expresses a hope that a further edition of the directory will be forthcoming in the following year. This did not materialise.
Tait found the opportunity to advertise his own stationery business in High Street was too good to miss. Yet strangely, the name of John Tait does not appear in the directory.
