Empire Exhibition

The Empire Exhibition of 1938 was not only a celebratory and educational venture but a commercial one too. It was seen as an integral part of Glasgow's economic regeneration and this can be seen in the number of commercial exhibits advertising companies, industries and newspapers such as The Times. The Times Clock, was advertised in the official Exhibition guide as "a convenient and pleasant place to meet your friends and to write letters".

The press was important to the Exhibition in disseminating word of the event throughout the country and beyond. However, it was primarily local newspapers that had exhibits at Bellahouston, notably the Glasgow Herald, the Scotsman, the Daily Record and the Scottish Daily Express. There were complaints that the London media in general paid the Exhibition scant attention.
