The St Andrew's Halls burned down in 1962. In 1980 an extension to the Mitchell Library was built on the site, behind the original façade, and the building also incorporated the Mitchell Theatre. Touring plays, amateur drama, musical comedies and pantomimes have been staged in the small theatre which has a capacity of 418. It is owned by Glasgow City Council.
