James Craig

James Craig was a shoemaker and councillor.

Born in Dunkeld, Craig and his brother set up business as shoemakers in Glasgow in the early 19th century. He was a bailie of Gorbals before the burgh was annexed by Glasgow in 1846, and he later became a bailie in the city.

Craig was prominent in the shoemakers’ craft guild, the Incorporation of Cordiners, and a deacon convener of the Trades House in 1853. He was also a member of Govan Parochial Board and a president of the Glasgow Perthshire Society.
