William Rae Wilson Smith (1817-1893) was a yarn merchant and councillor.
A Liberal and staunch advocate of free trade, Wilson represented the 7th Ward on the town council from 1874 to 1888. He was best known for his work on the Health Committee, taking a particular interest in the disposal of rubbish and sewage. As a member of the Libraries Committee he supported free libraries and was involved in the disposal of the Mitchell Bequest.
Also known as "Alphabet Smith", William Smith was an active and prominent member of the Philosophical Society of Glasgow.
