John Adam (1818-1890) was a leading light in the Free Church of Scotland.
Born in Kilsyth, Adam was ordained as minister of the Free West Church, Alloa, in 1843, the year of the Disruption. He moved to South Church in Aberdeen in 1849, and then to Wellpark Free Church in 1867.
Adam retired in 1875 on his appointment as Convener of the Home Mission Committee. In this post he set up a number of new churches in the Glasgow area. He was greatly respected as a judge of character, as a public speaker and debater, and as an expert on church law.
