Established in 1854, the firm of McCall & Stephen, bakers and biscuit manufacturers, was soon featuring amongst prizewinners for their products at exhibitions. The Adelphi Factory, illustrated here, was a major employer in the Gorbals area and involved in both manufacturing and distribution. Regular investment in modern machinery allowed the firm to build up a strong position in the market for biscuits and cakes, and they expanded into several English cities.
