George, Lord Young (1819-1907) was a judge and a Lord Advocate 1869-1874.
Young was the son of a procurator fiscal from Dumfries who graduated from the University of Edinburgh and passed to the Scottish bar in 1840. In a legal glittering career he became sheriff of Inverness in 1853 and of Haddington and Berwick the following year; solicitor general for Scotland 1862-1865, 1865-1867 and 1868-1869; Lord Advocate 1869-1874 and a Court of Session judge, with the title Lord Young, from 1874 until 1905. In this latter capacity as a Lord of Judiciary Young visited Glasgow three times a year to sit in the circuit court.
Young was also the Liberal MP for Wigton, 1865-1874 and the author of the influential Public Health Act for Scotland in 1871 and the Scottish Education Act of 1872.
