Charles Bernard was a theatre manager and lessee.
Bernard was an Englishman who was best known as the conductor of an act known as Bernard and Vestris’ Minstrels. He settled in Glasgow in the late 1860s and purchased the Choral Hall and some adjoining buildings on the corner of West Nile and Sauchiehall Streets. He opened the Gaiety Theatre there in 1874.
After meeting success with his “burnt cork” variety shows, Bernard began to stage plays and pantomimes at the Gaiety, and attracted good houses. He became manager of the Theatre Royal in Hope Street in 1883.
